From chicks to chickens!

3 Jan

Surprise! The girls have grown up. At 4.5 months, these little ladies are pretty much full grown and about ready to start making us omelets. Can’t wait to have you all over for brunch!

Here’s a quick who’s who of our backyard farm. Enjoy!

Tootsie now! She’s still got 5 toes and a spunky attitude, but aside from that I’m sure you hardly recognize her. Continue reading

Chickens who poop get moved to the coop!

21 Sep

We’ve got month old chickens! I have a few things to say about that:

1) They’ve now been living in a bathtub for 4 weeks. With the glow of the heat lamp and their incessant peeping I feel like I’m living in either the red light district or the Green Mile. The novelty of both have worn off, so it’s about time to free the flock.

2) As previously mentioned, bigger chicks make bigger poops. Which they step in. And track all over the brooder (er, bathtub), and no matter how often you replace shavings or pick up after them it’s never enough. Time to take the poop outside, ladies.

3) Bigger chicks also have bigger wings…which they like to flap…with vigor. This plus pine shavings creates a wind tunnel in the tub that shoots pine dust out of the top of the shower and all over the boys’ bathroom. Did I mention I’m seriously allergic to pine? Whose idea were these chickens anyway?! Continue reading

One week down…and they’re still cute

28 Aug

Happy one week birthday, chickadees! Let’s celebrate with some pics to show how you’ve grown, shall we?

This is Bell. She’s grown taller and secured the reputation as most kid friendly. Which means that she squawks and squirms the least when being held. Good girl, Bell, you’ll go far.

Penny is our biggest chick by far. While she’s still super fluffy, she’s also grown in some fancy flying feathers, which she uses for just that. Like Bell, Penny doesn’t mind being held as much as the other three. Love her for that. Continue reading

Chicks and puppies. So cute I’m pooping rainbows.

22 Aug

Okay, it’s not me pooping rainbows, it’s the chickens. And thanks to them we’ve got rainbows scattered all over this darned house. But they’re cuuuute, so we’ve forgiven them.

Oh, and there are dogs in these pics too. With all this adorable who needs commentary? I’ll totally keep it to captions. Now say hello to Penny.

Penny can really shake a tail feather.

Watch her break it down. Go Penny. Continue reading

Meet the girls – our chicks are here!

21 Aug

Aaagh, this has been the most exciting day! You may remember I mentioned that we have been thinking of raising chickens. Well, the boys are between summer school and the start of the new school year, so we are using the next 3 weeks to brood 5 new baby chicks and introduce them to their coop! Eek!

Our girls hatched yesterday in Connecticut and were packaged up and mailed just hours later through the good ol’ US Postal Service. I called our local post office this morning in the hopes that our girls had arrived in the 9 am shipment to avoid some of the daytime heat and, sure enough, there they were. The boys and I freaked out, grabbed the camera, ran to the car, took a celebratory photo, and jammed up the hill to the post office. Little dude was this excited.
